Have you ever thought about God’s love for you? How vast and everlasting it is? Sometimes when I think about God’s love I wonder what I have done to deserve it. Or why would God give a sinner like me His everlasting love. Sometimes it is hard to know or feel God’s love. Despite my sins and my lack of feeling sometimes, I always must remember that I can’t do anything to change God’s love for me. God is so generous in His love for us. I always like to go back to John 3:16 to remember I cannot earn God’s love, “God so loved the world that He gave His only son, Jesus Christ”.  God gave us His only Son, who died on the cross for us because He loved us so much. Notice, that no where in the verse is there mention of God’s love for us it’s something we earned. Jesus came and died for us to know God’s love.

So why do we think we have to earn God’s love? There are so many things that can separate us from feeling God’s love. Sin, temptation, Satan’s lies, and the worldly pleasures just to name a few. It’s hard to experience fully God’s love when we have sin on our heart or are seeking the things of the world that are not of God. The beauty of God’s love is that He has given us the sacrament of reconciliation to deeply know his love. Pope Francis says this, “In the Sacrament of Reconciliation is a place of mercy, and to allow ourselves to be touched by the merciful love of the Lord who always forgives us.”

At women’s group this past week we were talking about God’s love. We were talking about knowing God’s love and how we can sometimes not feel that love. I was sitting in the corner of the couch and the Holy Spirit just gave me words of wisdom…you can’t earn what you already have. It so simple, yet so beautiful. You can’t earn God’s love because you already have it. Leaving women’s group, I found myself just saying it over and over in my head just trying to process the gravity of what that statement means. It’s really something to meditate on because of the eternal and everlasting nature of God’s love.

This month I challenge you to simply rest in God’s love and then show that love to those around you. Meditate on how deep and unending it is and see where God takes you. I can promise you if you are faithful God will take you on a journey to know his love deeply. Once you receive God’s love it will be overflowing into your everyday life. “I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” -John 13: 34-35
